U of T DEEP Summer Academy, 2026
In 2026, I also took “Med-Tech Explorers” during the Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program (DEEP) Summer Academy at the University of Toronto. The course dives into how non-invasive sensors — the kind that let a smartwatch tell you're exercising, or let hospital equipment measure blood oxygen — capture and process signals, and how that data feeds into medical device design.
Alongside sensor fundamentals and machine learning for health monitoring, the course emphasized human-centered design and equity, pushing us to think about who a medical device is actually built for. For my project, I combined those ideas into a gesture-controlled medical claw: a robotic gripper that reads hand-motion input from a sensor and translates it into precise, real-time claw movement, aimed at assistive pick-and-place tasks.

Studied how non-invasive sensors capture signals like motion and blood oxygen for health monitoring
Learned data processing and machine learning techniques used in wearable medical devices
Applied human-centered design and equity principles to medical device design
Designed and built a gesture-controlled medical claw that translates hand movement into gripper motion
